Pecan Springs Commons

Pecan Springs Commons

Pecan Springs Commons is Green Doors' newest project and provides integrated supportive and affordable housing in northeast Austin.

Pecan Springs Commons serves a mix of individuals and families who are at-risk of homelessness or have successfully exited homelessness. The community includes 82 one and two-bedroom apartments and extensive public amenities, including community gardens, pocket parks, onsite learning facilities (including a computer lab), and green spaces.

Green Doors decided to move forward with this specific project for several reasons. First, it preserved existing affordable housing in a neighborhood that urgently needs quality, well-managed and well-maintained affordable housing. Second, it complemented the Austin Police Department's broader effort to clean up a part of the Pecan Springs neighborhood that has considerable urban blight (abandoned buildings, high drug activity, prostitution and other illegal activities). Third, it has allowed Green Doors to bring to bear its green building practices to a neighborhood block desperately in need of quality, green and affordable housing to make this area a more attractive, sustainable and desirable place to live. And fourth, it has helped build community and increase independence among residents on a neighborhood block with frayed social ties and little trust.
